How to get predictive text on WhatsApp
Gboard
- Open a WhatsApp chat and tap the message box so a keyboard is on screen. WhatsApp settings have no predictive text row.
- On Gboard, open keyboard settings. The current Gboard help uses the features menu at the top of the keyboard, then More settings, then Text correction. On many layouts you can also press and hold the comma key and slide to settings. Gboard moves that icon.
- Turn on Show suggestion strip. That is the bar. Next-word suggestions, when that row is on the same screen, is the next word. Gboard renames rows by version.
- If those rows are missing, another keyboard is on screen. The phone Settings path to Gboard changes by Android version. There is still no switch inside WhatsApp.
Samsung Keyboard
- Open a WhatsApp chat and confirm the keyboard on screen is Samsung Keyboard, not Gboard.
- Tap the settings icon on that keyboard and turn Predictive text on. Samsung documents that switch while the keyboard is open.
- If you do not see the icon, open the phone’s keyboard settings and look for Samsung Keyboard, then Predictive text. Some versions put it under Smart typing. Samsung says the menu moves. There is no row inside WhatsApp.
iPhone
- Open Settings, then General, then Keyboard. WhatsApp has no predictive text row of its own.
- Turn on Predictive, or Predictive Text. Apple uses both names. Autocorrection on that screen is a different switch. It changes a word. It does not draw the bar.
- You can also touch and hold the emoji or globe key, tap Keyboard Settings, and use the same switch.
- Go back to WhatsApp and tap the message box. The suggestions sit above the iPhone keyboard.
WhatsApp predictive text not working
If the bar never shows, the keyboard in the chat is not the one you changed, or its suggestion strip is still off. On Gboard that row is Show suggestion strip.
