This page covers two searches: listening to a WhatsApp voice note without the sender knowing, and whether forwarding a voice note notifies the original sender. There is no secret listen. For the longer listener FAQ on replay and share, see if I listen to a WhatsApp voice note, will they know. Listening without opening the chat keeps its title: listen to a WhatsApp voice message without opening it.

Listen or Forward WhatsApp Voice Notes Without Them Knowing

Can you listen to a WhatsApp voice note without the sender knowing? No. Tapping Play is how WhatsApp plays a voice message you received. On the copy they sent, Message info can list Played. Help says there is no way to turn off play receipts for voice messages. Turning Read receipts off hides blue ticks on texts. It does not hide a played voice note.

If I forward a WhatsApp voice note, will the person know?

The original sender is not notified when you forward their voice note. WhatsApp Help does not describe a notice back to the person who first sent the message. Any messages you forward that are not your own outgoing messages show a Forwarded label to you and to anyone who receives that copy. You can forward a message to up to five chats at one time.

Forwarding is not the same as tapping Play. Long-press the voice message and choose Forward without tapping Play. Help lists Played when the recipient has played the voice message. Opening the chat so you can forward can still show Read or Seen on Message info when they have seen the voice message and have not played it, if read receipts are on. Forwarding does not undo a play you already made.

Android

  1. In the chat, tap and hold the voice message.
  2. Tap Forward.
  3. Select the chats.
  4. Tap Send.

iPhone

  1. In the chat, tap and hold the voice message, then tap Forward.
  2. Tap Forward.
  3. Select the chats.
  4. Tap Forward.

What listening shows

On a voice message you received, a green microphone means you have not played it, and a blue microphone means you have. Those colors are on your screen. What the sender can check is the note they sent: a gray microphone means it has not been played by everyone, and a blue microphone means everyone has played it. Message info names Delivered, Read or Seen, and Played. Seen means they saw the voice message and did not play it.

Read receipts off still leave the played mark

The privacy switch is named Read receipts. Turning it off does not disable play receipts for voice messages, and Help says there is no way to turn those off. Group chats still send read receipts. With Read receipts off, you also stop seeing read receipts from other people.

Android

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options, then Settings.
  3. Tap Privacy.
  4. Turn off Read receipts.

iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Settings, or your profile picture.
  3. Tap Privacy.
  4. Turn off Read receipts.

There is no documented way to listen and hide the played mark. If you do not want Played on the note they sent, do not tap Play.

What not to install

A modified WhatsApp, a “listen without them knowing” app, or a stranger’s number will not add a silent play. Those are a common way to get the account restricted. We do not publish a support number, and we do not publish a ban length.

If you need the words

After you have already played the note, the privacy question is over. Forward a note you already have and ask for the text: transcribe a WhatsApp voice note. That does not rewind the played mark on the original chat.

Shmooz is a separate AI chat on WhatsApp. It is not WhatsApp Support. It can transcribe a voice note you send into that chat. It cannot hide a play receipt, and it cannot listen to someone else's note for you.

Need the words, not a hidden listen?

Forward a voice note you already have into Shmooz and ask for the text. That does not hide a play mark, and we are not WhatsApp Support.

FAQ

Listening and forwarding are separate. Played is a play. Forwarded is a label on the copy you send on.

Can I listen to a voice note on WhatsApp without the sender knowing?

No. Tapping Play is how WhatsApp plays a voice message you received. On the copy they sent, Message info can list Played. Help says there is no way to turn off play receipts for voice messages. Turning Read receipts off hides blue ticks on texts and leaves the played mark in place. Shmooz cannot hide a play. This page is not WhatsApp Support.

If I listen to a voice note on WhatsApp, will they know?

Yes, if you tap Play. Message info can list Played, and a blue microphone on the note they sent means everyone has played it. A gray microphone means it has not been played by everyone. Read or Seen means they saw the voice message and did not play it. Help does not describe a separate notification that says you listened.

If I forward a voice note on WhatsApp, will the person know?

Help does not describe a notice back to the person who originally sent the voice message when you forward it. The Forwarded label is shown to you and to anyone who receives that copy, when the message was not your own outgoing message. You can forward it to up to five chats at one time. On Android, tap and hold, tap Forward, select the chats, and tap Send. On iPhone, tap and hold, tap Forward, tap Forward, select the chats, and tap Forward.

Does WhatsApp notify forwarded voice notes?

WhatsApp Help does not describe a notification to the original sender when a message is forwarded. Recipients of that copy see a Forwarded label when the message was not your own outgoing message. Playing the note in the original chat is separate and can still show as Played. Forwarding does not undo a play.

Can you forward a voice note on WhatsApp without them knowing?

The original sender is not notified of the forward. Long-press the voice message and choose Forward without tapping Play. Help lists Played when the recipient has played the voice message, so forwarding without Play is not the same as a play. Opening the chat so you can forward can still show Read or Seen when they have seen the voice message and have not played it, if read receipts are on. The person you forward it to can see the Forwarded label.

Does turning off read receipts hide that I listened to a voice note?

No. On Android, open More options, then Settings, then Privacy, and turn off Read receipts. On iPhone, open Settings or your profile picture, then Privacy, and turn off Read receipts. Help says this does not disable play receipts for voice messages, and there is no way to turn those off. Group chats still send read receipts. With the switch off, you also stop seeing read receipts from other people.
